This new agricultural barn has a heavy timber framed structure providing posts, braces, top plates and joist, with a softwood roof structure and is an example of using green oak traditional timber framing for visible feature sections, with a modern stick frame trussed rafter roof.

This post and beam based frame was made to protect and conserve this old stone walled barn, and allow for it to be re-used. The timber frame needed to be freestanding inside the old walls and also have deep enough eaves to cover and protect the ancient walls, all whilst being able to withstand the ferocious Dartmoor weather! The Douglas Fir was grown within a mile of our sawmill and workshop in West Devon and the timber frame was built onsite on the high moors of Dartmoor National Park, about 11 miles from us.
