Trade and Professionals
Devon based specialist traditional hand crafted or modern contract timber framing, CNC heavy timber machining and 3D CAD CAM timber frame design.
Combining the best artisan craftsmanship with the most advanced timber design and machining technology.
Specialist timber frame design and build offering traditional heavy or modern 'stick' off site green oak or softwood timber frame and post & beam construction in Devon and Cornwall.
We are one of the few businesses in the UK to use state of the art 3D CAD CAM Viskon timber design software specifically developed for the timber frame construction industry. Our projects range from single components to timber frames for residential, commercial, educational or leisure structures.
We work with architects, structural engineers, garden designers, builders, developers and other timber frame businesses. We cut timber frames for self builders and individual enthusiasts making their own cabins, sheds and living wagons. We will consider any project – large or small.
Our access to advanced timber technology, combined with the skills of our specialist traditional timber frame carpenters and designers allows us to offer a complete precision timber frame construction service. We can make cut roofs and timber frame components for heavy structural traditional jointed and pegged timber frame, or modern stick frames, in any timber material including heavy Oak beams, CLT or glulam.
Viskon 3D CAD CAM Design and Build specialist software for timber construction
Viskon v 17: full 3D CAD/CAM design software for timber construction
This specialist software provides a timber design and construction solution from initial sketches to workshop cutting lists and CNC machining files. The programme allows for the input and accurate detailing of wall and roof definitions with real-time 3D preview and the creation of up to 10 layers as frames, panels, insulation, battens, cladding etc.
Each joint produces automatic dimensions in technical drawings and machine transfer files for export to CNC timber jointing machines.
Viskon software facilitates exact pre-planning for production of timber joints such as drilling, birdsmouths, lap-joints, tenons/mortises, dovetails, chamfers, scarfs, heel joints, profiling, slots, notches/grooves, rebates, offsets and much more. From simple or complex timber roofs to full timber framed domestic or commercial buildings.
Our Viskon v17 CAD/CAM design software produces IFC files and can import and export up to IFC4. We work with XML files and we can export DXF, DWG 2d and 3d and SDS 3D, and we can export 3D PDF files.
CNC specialist modern or traditional timber frame machining service in Devon
Combining artisan craftsmanship with advanced CNC technology.
Our access to a Hundegger CNC multi head timber jointing machine, a rare machine in the South West, has revolutionised our production facility. This innovative technology allows our designers to create entire buildings on our German 3D CAD CAM timber design specialist software. This software can send accurate cutting files to the CNC timber jointing machine. The CNC timber cutting machine is designed for cutting timber elements quickly and precisely with extensive milling and drilling operations on timber dimensions from 20mm x 40mm right up to 200mm x 450mm.
Access to this sophisticated technology has allowed us to compete commercially with standard timber frame and stick frame importers. We can make cut roofs, standard, bespoke or multiple repeatable timber frames and modular timber buildings.
Despite having this amazing facility, our hearts still lie in traditionally hand working timber and, for commercial projects, we tend to use a combination of CNC and hand crafting, whilst for bespoke projects or complex carpentry, there is no substitute for a skilled pair of hands and old fashioned tools and techniques!

Heavy timber beam/log moulder planer
Our beam planer/log moulder allows for 4 side planing of heavy big beams and posts. It also opens the door to more projects and possibilities including the supply of high quality planed beams and moulded beams and posts which join together perfectly for the manufacture of log cabins and log homes.
Sawmill facility
Our own sawmill allows us to purchase locally commercially grown sawlogs and massively reduce the road miles and embodied energy of our timber buildings. It also, crucially, allows us to select the most suitable timber for each element of each project and ensure constant quality control of our raw material. Using locally grown timber from Devon and Cornwall in our timber framed buildings not only reduces our carbon footprint but also helps to support local jobs, economies and communities whilst also encouraging the local forestry industry to continue to produce this amazing renewable natural building material.
