Green Oak timber framed entrance porch

This traditional cruck timber framed truss makes a perfect grand entrance for the Duchy of Cornwall Nursery at Lostwithiel.

The huge curved cruck blades were made from the two halves of a carefully selected naturally curved English Oak and are jointed together with a naturally curved Oak tie beam and collar

Green oak timber framed glazed porch

This green oak porch works as a welcoming atrium for this barn conversion. It is double glazed with toughened Argon filled 24mm glass.

Glazing on a green oak timber frame: Onsite glazing carpentry is labour intensive and takes place ahead of the glass installation.  Oak cover boards are cut to size and the glass is fitted, before the cover boards are fixed with stainless steel screws.

‘This is a simple green oak timber framed veranda with a glazed roof. No bracing was needed in this frame as it is secured to the house on two sides.

It is advisable to keep upright timber posts which are exposed to the elements at least 200mm above the ground level. This allows the timber to dry out and minimises the extent of the ‘splash’ zone where rain will splash up from the ground. The ‘boots’ that we use most often are galvanised or stainless steel feet for a contemporary look, or granite staddlestones, such as the ones used on this veranda, for a more traditional appearance.
